Step by Step Guide of How to Use a Bedpan
- Sprinkle baby powder on the edge of the bedpan to make it easier to slide under the person.
- If the person can sit up and lift up their hips slightly, or if there is an additional helper ask them to help them do so, as you slide the bedpan under the bottom.
- If the person is unable to lift their hips, help the person turn to the side.
- Gently press the bedpan against their buttocks and then help them turn back onto the bedpan.
- Ensure you hold the bedpan in position and help the person roll of the bedpan then carefully place the bed pan to a side.
- If the user is able to lift their own hips initially then when they are finished ask the person to raise their hips again and remove the bedpan.
- Remember if you can leave the person alone safely once you have initially placed the bedpan under, then leave the room to give them privacy.
- If the person needs assistance wiping, then help them do so.
- Then empty the bedpan into a toilet.
- Clean the bedpan as recommended on the packaging or in line with additional information given.
